The guest speaker at the March 12 Humanist Forum is Ron Banister, a retired teacher who served as Science Consultant K-12 programs for the Winnipeg School Division. He is currently pursuing an honours history degree at the University of Winnipeg. His topic is “Darwin and God.”
In Darwin’s theory of evolution there was no requirement for the intervention of supernatural forces to explain human evolution. Darwin had ceased to need a God.
“If Darwin lost his faith through his diligent pursuit of knowledge, was there a `tipping point,’ a moment in time when this occurred? I will attempt to determine w.hether or not there was such a `tipping point’ in his belief system and, if so, what it was and when and where it occurred. Ultimately, I will describe where Darwin was left toward the end of his life in terms of his relationship with God. Did he die a Christian, a theist, an agnostic, or an atheist? To what extent was his work a tipping point with respect to religion and science?” — Ron Banister.
The Humanist Forums are held at the Unitarian Universalist Church, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., on the second Wednesday of each month. Mark your calendars! Following the presentation there are refreshments and discussion. Join us for a stimulating evening.
