Rev. Stefan Jonasson will present “Contemporary Challenges to Humanism.”
“From the Enlightenment, when humanism was seen to be undermining Christendom, to the Moral Majority, when secular humanism was proclaimed to be the convenient enemy of Christian fundamentalists, the principal threat to humanism around the world came from religion,” observes Stefan.
“Today, in an increasingly secular world, the challenges to humanist values come increasingly from secular ideologies, in both the academy and public life, alongside shifting standards of evidence in the social sciences, and the resurgence of illiberalism—even in many liberal, humanistic circles.”
The Humanist Forums are held at First Unitarian Universalist Church on the second Wednesday of each month from September through June. Following the presentation there will be refreshments and discussion.
