Here are videos I made while testing with a screen reader.
Slideshow image graphic alt text example
This is a very short video so you can hear how a screen reader (in this case, JAWS) “reads” the image in this page. The alt text is generated by the website and doesn’t adequately describe the image.
Menus, landmarks, and Plan Your Visit form
In this video, I navigate through the main menu and the Plan Your Visit form. I used the NVDA screen reader with two settings on: one to show a “box” where the focus is, and another to announce the key I was pressing (e.g., Tab). Note how I’m able to tab out of the form (this is a failure to “contain focus” which is an accessibility fail). Note how in two screens I need to use my mouse to click to advance to the next screen because I can’t press Tab to get to the button I need to click.
What menus should sound like with SR
Menus with drop-down submenus should let the screen reader user know that there’s a submenu. This is an example of what a properly-designed menu should sound like.
