Margins of Leisure

“It has been borne upon me again and again that, to many, the chance of a vacation does not even come,” lamented Horace Westwood one summer while he was serving All Souls Church, when he would spend his summers at Winnipeg Beach. He believed it was essential for everyone to enjoy an opportunity to detach themselves from their work. Leisure should be for everyone, not just the privileged few. Henry David Thoreau would have agreed. In Walden, he wrote: “I love a broad margin of leisure in my life,” explaining how he could while away a summer morning sitting in the sunny doorway of his cabin. What are you doing to do next to nothing this summer?
