Defending the Institutions of Democracy

“It is institutions that help us to preserve decency,” maintains Timothy Snyder, but institutions are more fragile than we realize and those with authoritarian impulses are quick to coopt, debase, or even destroy them. People’s confidence in public institutions has been eroding for half a century, but it’s time to recognize once again their critical importance in democratic societies and invest ourselves in their health and stability. “So choose an institution you care about – a court, a newspaper, a law, a labor union – and take its side.”
