Counting Yourself In

Last month, Canada conducted its quinquennial census and the public response ranged from amusing to disturbing. My only disappointment was that I received the short-form census, as I have every year of my life, because I would have happily completed the long form. I’m a fan of the census because I believe in evidence-based decision making – not to mention the value of individuals and societies taking stock of themselves every once in a while. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t legitimate concerns with how censuses are taken and used. So I counted myself in, even though I didn’t get the chance to do so as fully as I would have liked. Maybe next time
