As a woman and lifelong feminist, I have always had an easier time identifying with and having empathy for the plight of women. For centuries, we have laboured under the weight of systemic discrimination and misogyny. It was easy to dissmiss the male voices that said: “What about us? Don’t we count too?” as whiny complaints. We ignore these voices at our peril. Why? Because definitions of gender are changing and the word most associated with masculinity is “toxic”. Boys and young men are confused, feeling alone and without guidance as they attempt to define what positive masculinity is. Any group of people who feel isolated, alone and unheard will find other ways to feel like they belong. Young men are increasingly finding belonging in far-right groups that espouse white supremacy and misogyny. As people who care about the world, we need to listen to, and support young boys and men, in a way we haven’t before. Especially now, when the world is at a tipping point.

Order of Service
Centering Thought
“Sometimes the disturbances, the chaos, the loudness, the spark causes change. Sometimes the things we’re afraid to say we must shout. Sometimes the conversations we back away from are the ones that need to happen in order to shift the circumstances of our life and the lives around us. Sometimes what’s hard is absolutely necessary.“
– Marisa Donelly
