At the May Humanist Forum, Kris Breckman will explore how ideas spread and shape human beliefs through the concept of memes. Drawing on The Religion Virus by Craig A. James and the influential works The Selfish Gene and The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, this presentation examines religion as a system of evolving ideas that interact with human cognition and culture.
The discussion connects meme theory with modern understandings of the human mind, offering a thoughtful humanist perspective on why religious beliefs persist and how rational inquiry, education, and critical thinking can help shape a more evidence-based worldview. The session will conclude with an analysis of existing humanist memes and their effectiveness.
The session will be held at the Unitarian Church, 603 Wellington Crescent, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, May 13.
Discussion will follow the presentation and refreshments will be provided.
(Humanist Forums are held on the second Wednesday of each month.)
