BEYOND GROWTH: REIMAGINING CAPITALISM FOR A FINITE PLANET

Earth-like planets may be an inevitability | UCLA

This topic will be addressed at the first of the autumn series of Humanist Forums, Wednesday, September 9, 2026 · 7:00–9:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Church.

How long can we continue to pursue economic growth on a planet with finite resources? The world’s population has grown to more than 8 billion, while the demands we place on land, water, energy and other resources continue to increase. This presentation begins with a simple concern: Can our planet sustain the way we are living and the growth we continue to pursue?

Kris Breckman will provide an overview of the situation, examine some of the forces contributing to it, and explore how capitalism—with its emphasis on growth, consumption and profit—is  contributing to the problem.

The presentation will then look at examples of what governments and others are already doing to place limits on growth and resource use, and consider what further action might be possible.

An advance copy of the presentation is being circulated to those registered for the Forums. If you want a copy click here or email Kris at breckmankris@gmail.com.

As always, the forum will follow our presentation/discussion format, providing an opportunity to question, challenge and explore the ideas together.

Refreshments will be provided.
