It is said that prayer is at the heart of religion; some say it is the oldest religious experience in the world. But what might this mean for Unitarian Universalists, or anyone who doesn't necessarily believe in God? Who, or what, would we be praying to, after all? This service explores the premise that prayer is a natural, universal, even helpful impulse, whether or not we profess belief in a Deity.

Reverend Millie admits to some surprise that this is the winner of the Time Machine survey.

We inaugurate this month’s theme of hospitality with a celebration of our gathering in community, with a ritual of water – the essential ingredient of life as we know it. You are invited to bring a small amount of water from a place or places meaningful in your life, to symbolize our interconnectedness with all of life. Each person or family will have the opportunity to add their water in a common bowl to some that was saved from last September's ritual (which includes some saved from years before that).

Plan to stay after the service for a potluck lunch. A few volunteers are needed pitch in for set-up and clean-up. Please contact Rev. Millie by email or phone at 204-474-12

The haunting words of Ysaye M. Barnwell ask whether we would offer shelter to The Other – people different from us in faith tradition, nationality, sexual orientation, or physical health – and we strive to meet that challenge. But mental health struggles tend to be even more isolating. And yet most of us are affected, whether in its grip ourselves, or caring about someone who is. Recent tragedies in the public eye might be shifting our reluctance to admit that we wrestle with these demons, and call us to be welcoming of those who are held in their grasp.

As someone once said, “Change is inevitable; growth is optional.” Life continues, but changes in all manner of ways. New opportunities arise even as old certainties collapse. Families form and families splinter. Jobs end, children leave home, partners die. When the familiar is fading and the future is unknown, can we welcome and embrace the new? There will be an opportunity to recognize life transitions during this service.
